Help us to build our first Electric Car

A Short Summary...

We are a team from the University of Southampton that designs and builds a single-seater racecar to compete in Formula Student - an international design competition.

Our members are fully responsible for managing the team, designing, building, and racing these high-performance cars! We rely on the generous support from our donors and industry sponsors to help us develop and push forward. Last year we had our best season yet with our car STAG VIB, where our team placed 5th overall at FS UK.

This year we are building our first Electric Vehicle and the top targets for this year are:

3rd at Formula Student UK

Sub 230kg car total mass

Increased drivability - less than 0.2s lost per lap due to fatigue

We believe these improvements will ensure that we turn last year's 5th position into a top 3 position this year!

What is Forumla Student?

Formula Student is the most established international motorsport competition at university level and has attracted over 800 universities to compete against each other at events all over the world. The competing teams are challenged to design and build a single-seater race car which must comply with a myriad of regulations. These cars then compete through a series of both static and dynamic events and points are awarded based on how well the design meets a range of business, environmental, and technical goals.

Formula Student is regarded as a great stepping-stone between university and the workplace, as it provides our team with real world engineering and management situations. Over the past 9 years, we've had over 50 team members secure internships and full-time jobs within F1 teams based on work done with our team, with some contributing to championship wining cars. Others have gone on to internships within high level automotive, motorsport, and aerospace engineering companies.

The UK competition, held at Silverstone, is organised by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, and is highly regarded by many prominent members of the motorsport industry including: Ross Brawn, Willem Toet, James Allison and Mike Gascoyne.

Who Are We?

Southampton University Formula Student Team (SUFST) is a group of nearly 300 enthusiastic students, from a variety of course backgrounds, driven to design and build a single-seater, open-wheel race car. The team has competed at Formula Student UK at Silverstone for the last 9 years, and we also compete in at least one European competition every year.

The team has a growing reputation: last year we smashed our points record at Formula Student UK, with a proud 5th place overall and finishing our first endurance. With the transition to an electric powertrain we are hoping to push the team to the next level.

Where will the money go?

The minimum we need to make this project happen is £4,000; however, we would love to be able to achieve £6,500 as this will mean that we have the best possible chance to reach the podium!

From now until July our team will be hard at work, making sure our car is the best that we can possibly build. The money raised from this campaign will allow us to build our dream car, with high quality parts and an entirely optimised package. These upgrades will help us to perform better at both Formula Student UK and our other European competitions.

Cost Breakdown:

Parts, Materials, and Services:

Slick Tyres: £2000

Wet Tyres: £800

Sensors for data acquisition: £500

Testing costs: £250

Additional Machining of components: £3,000

Any additional money raised will be used to allow us to do more testing with our car before competition.
