A short summary of your project
Southampton University Boat Club is raising money for a 2018 coxed four. This is costing £13,000 and will go to the Senior Men's squad. They had a hugely successful season last year and have continued to this term. However, they're being held back by their equipment as their current boat is over 15 years old - heavy, slow and unreliable. They need a better boat to be able to get the results that they deserve!
We appreciate that this amount is an ambitious target, but why not go big? Thank you for all your support and contributions.
Who are you?
Southampton University Boat Club (SUBC) is a student-run rowing club which is one of the largest and oldest clubs on campus. With over 150 current members, we offer rowing for complete beginners up to competing at prestigious events including Henley Royal Regatta where we represent the university.
As we are one of the largest clubs on campus, demand is beginning to exceed supply. We are struggling with the number of boats to cater all those who want to row. Moreover, a substantial number of beginners join SUBC each year; this is greater than those who have rowed before. By improving our equipment, Southampton University will be a more attractive university for rowers to apply to. It is a strong university in terms of academia, and by upgrading boats, this is likely to increase our intake of rowers at a high level. In turn, our rowing level will increase and therefore our results, representing the university and getting Southampton’s name out in this positive way.
We have had many recent successes from SUBC. The senior men had a crew race at Henley Royal Regatta this year, making it to the second day out of five and losing to the eventual winners is a great feat from a student-run club. So many members are dedicated to competing at their highest level and unfortunately, our boats are letting us down. Our current men’s Fours boats are heavier than most of those we compete against, which really lets us down. Last year, we had to ask Winchester College to borrow one of their Fours boats to fulfil the requirement due to three fours competing simultaneously at BUCS. Numbers have increased since 20-21 academic year, so this is likely to be a reoccurring issue.
We have been successful racing Fours so far this season placing 1st and 2nd at regional events like UBBC head and with 3 wins at Upper Thames Autumn Head as well as last season in which a Four won multiple times in the summer and just missed out on competing at Henley Royal Regatta. Updating our boats would give us a better chance at ranking highly in more competitive national events later on in the season such as BUCS.
Where will the money go?
We are raising money to purchase the Senior Men's squad a 2018 (near-new) coxed four. This is at an incredibly good deal as it was a private sale with the manufacturers.
Any money raised will go towards repayment of this boat as currently the University are loaning us the money. If we raise more than the £13,000 we would like to put this towards a women's 8+. This would be for the senior women so that the novice women could acquire one of their shells and we continue updating our boats that way rather than older ones.
We want to give regular updates including those in our 3-monthly newsletters to our alumni who have joined our mailing list (GDPR safe).
We will encourage large donors to contribute in choosing the name for the new boat. We would welcome a group of alumni to name the boat together, i.e. from the same crew/ graduation year.
